NATIVE AMERICAN SWEAT LODGE CEREMONY The sweat lodge ceremony is an ancient Native American purification ritual whereby one enters into the profound silence of the Great Mystery to be transformed physically, emotionally and spiritually. The "Inipi" or sweat lodge is built with willow branches in the shape of the turtle’s back, representing Turtle Island or North America. Blankets or tarpaulins cover the lodge to keep the heat contained.
Rocks are heated for several hours to "red hot" and are brought into the lodge upon request of the leader or "one who pours water." Sage, cedar and sweetgrass are gently brushed on each rock. All are invited to pray and sing. The ceremony begins. One is revitalized and rejuvenated in mind, body and spirit. A connection with all in the lodge, with other two-leggeds, four leggeds, winged ones and all of creation is deeply felt. One truly understands the meaning of Mitakuye Oyasin (translation -- "All my Relations").
